“Sleep, drink water, and treat your skin.” – Georgia Louise

It never fails to surprise me how rapidly the beauty industry evolves. A trend is here one week and gone the next, so who can really keep up? I feel like one is either completely unaware of the latest trends or is running behind to keep up. But in case your beauty routine does in fact need updating, here are five things the beauty world is currently ditching.

1. DIY food face masks

Making a concoction of items from your fridge and pantry may be fun but is not a necessity for your skin, by any means. In fact, beauty lovers have become more conscious of skincare ingredients than they were before. If you eat foods like bananas, honey, avocado, your skin will thank you. After all, skincare starts from the inside out so no need to put it on your face. And store bought face masks and sheet masks are still really nourishing and feel really nice on the skin so save yourself the time and the mess from this DIY.

2. witch hazel toners

So witch hazel toner had its moment of fame and then that kind of died down a bit after it turned out, witch hazel can end up damaging the skin barrier and causing excessive dryness over time. With that said, this is still a pretty popular and common ingredient and is said to treat acne, uneven skin tone, and sunburns and is meant to tighten the skin and soothe irritation. To each their own, but the overall verdict seems to be: don’t overdo it.

3. skipping makeup prep

Have you ever noticed in makeup videos done by professional makeup artists, the model’s skin is always super dewy and fresh?!

Doing your makeup with a clean face, clean hands and clean makeup brushes really does make all the difference. Use a primer or at the very least a moisturizer or some sort of serum to make sure your skin is fresh and ready for products! Not to mention, makeup brushes hoard bacteria which can lead to acne and potentially even a muddy look or muddy colors due to old product buildup. Ew.

4. not double cleansing (remover wipes)

We are still using makeup wipes, however… we’re not depending on them completely to give us a clean face after wearing makeup for several hours. The new makeup removing method is to use a cleansing balm and lather that on your face to melt off your makeup. This “double-cleansing” method has gained popularity due to claims that this is much more gentle on your skin and is effective in reducing wrinkles over time! So we’re keeping the makeup wipes to a minimum.

5. hoarding makeup

Makeup expires and being mindful is in. It’s fun to try new beauty products but mostly stick to your favorites. Owning entire boxes worth (or more) of makeup is out. Save yourself the money and space. It’s definitely tempting to buy every new product on the market but seriously, so much of it is the same product just repackaged…It’s kind of crazy how so much makeup on the market is only slightly different in quality, ingredients, and even price points.
